Have you experienced the need for balance in your life? Does it seem that it is impossible to reach? Do you question if balance is even possible or good? I have asked that same question, and I have come to the conclusion that balance is essential to live healthy, productive lives, but it is not always pretty. It requires devotion, understanding and guidance from the lord.
Be sober [well balanced and self-disciplined], be alert and cautious at all times. That enemy of yours, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion [fiercely hungry], seeking someone to devour. — 1 Peter 5:8 (AMP)
Once I saw that I was overbalanced in one area, I thought I had to go totally in the other direction. I “adjusted” and “adapted” far too much. I started being extremely kind , patient and persistent. But was that discipline balanced? I learned from my experiences that one extreme is just as bad as the other. What we must learn in all this is balance.
On one hand, we must not be harsh and hard. But on the other hand, we must not be weak and excessively soft. We must not be irritable and impatient, flying off the handle and acting out of emotion. On the other hand, we must not be so mild mannered that we become doormats and whipping posts for those who will take advantage of us if we give them a chance. There is a time to be patient and forbearing, and there is a time to be firm and decisive. There is a time to “not be angry,” and there is a time to display righteous indignation. It is wisdom to know when to do which.
I am going to give you some practical answers and then the spiritual ones that will help with the practical. We can not ignore the fact that our mind, body, and soul are all connected. The way we care for each of these areas in our lives will affect the other two. I have found in my life, my best days were the ones when I included exercise, Bible study, and intentional worship.
We all need time for spiritual growth, professional growth, social interaction and health development( doing physical exercise, sleeping, eating well, etc.) All of those areas in our lives need to be taken care of. We need to make sure that everyday we have let air in our lives, by opening the spiritual , career, social & health windows.
The practical steps are good. They will help find balance, but we cannot do this on our own. We can not climb mountains of life balanced without the empowering grace of God.
Ask for His grace when you find yourself unbalanced and near the edge of the cliff. The grace of God, His favor, will give you the wisdom, strength, and courage you need.
When you feel out of control, stop. Take a break, and go to the mountain of God (the place of worship.) Listen for the guidance of the Holy spirit even in the smallest of things on your “to do” list.
We want to live our lives as Jesus did. He said and did only what God told Him to do. This is possible when we give ourselves the chance to be guided by God. Let us give ourselves that chance and let God in our lives to take control.
Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to live a balanced life in every area. Please show me any areas where I have gone to an unhealthy extreme. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.
